Earn College Credit at Westfield State University with the State Seal of Biliteracy

Students with the State Seal of Biliteracy receive Westfield State University credit for beginning and intermediate language courses, with students earning either 12 or 15 credits based on the language-level completed.

You can use these credits towards your total (120) credits required for graduation, as elective credits toward a Spanish major or minor, or for other programs with world language requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the seal of biliteracy?

According to the MA Department of Education, “The State Seal of Biliteracy is an award provided by state approved districts that recognizes high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language in recognition of having studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.” For more, visit the state website.

What languages are being accepted?

All languages are accepted. At present, Westfield State will be able to offer further language instruction in Spanish.

How can I receive credit?

Please send documentation to hispanicstudies@westfield.ma.edu regarding the completion of the seal. Documentation must specify the foreign language and whether it is regular or with distinction. Documentation could include:

  • A copy of high school transcripts or diplomas with the seal attached.
  • An official letter from the high school that reports the completion level and the language.

First Year students should wait until they have completed their high school requirements to send documentation.

When will I receive the credit?

Students should see credit appear on their degree evaluation in MyWestfield as quickly as possible. If for whatever reason the documentation provided does not clearly state the level and language, it may take longer to receive credit.
