Westfield State University’s Master of Education in Moderate Disabilities program prepares future teachers for initial Massachusetts licensure to support students with moderate disabilities. Through a combination of coursework, school-based field experiences, and a practicum, students gain the expertise and confidence to foster growth and success for all learners.

Two Track Options

  • Track One (PreK–2 or PreK–8): Designed for candidates who do not yet hold an initial teaching license, this track provides comprehensive preparation, including methods courses, fieldwork, and practicum experience.
  • Track Two (PreK–2 or PreK–8): Designed for candidates who already hold an initial license in early childhood, elementary, or middle school, this track offers a focused pathway to add licensure in Moderate Disabilities while building on prior teaching experience.

    Preparation for Massachusetts Licensure

    The M.Ed. in Moderate Disabilities provides the coursework, field experiences, and practicum required for initial teaching licensure in Massachusetts, equipping educators with the knowledge and credentials to teach students with moderate disabilities in PreK–2 or PreK–8 classrooms.

What are the application requirements?

Prospective students should access the graduate application online at connect.westfield.ma.edu/apply/

The following material must be received for an application to be reviewed:

  • Completed graduate application and $50 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended indicating a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three professional letters of recommendation. At least one academic recommendation is suggested.
  • Narrative statement about your professional goals, academic experience, work experience, and other factors such as academic achievements not reflected in transcripts that support your application.
  • For Initial Licensure students: a copy of official Communication and Literacy, Reading & Writing subtest MTEL scores or approved alternative as outlined by DESE
How long will it take me to complete the master’s degree?

This varies, most students take two to three years to complete depending on how many courses are taken a semester.

When are the courses offered and is there flexibility?

Courses are offered in the late afternoon to early evening during fall, spring, and summer sessions. Education course modality may vary.

For the initial licensure program will I need to take any time off to complete the practica?

Working teachers can complete practica while maintaining their teaching positions. For students who are not working as teachers day-time availability is needed to complete this requirement.

Can I take a course without enrolling into the program?

Yes, students can take up to two courses (six credits) non-matriculated prior to matriculating into the program. Financial aid is not available for non-matriculated courses and cost can be found on our tuition and fees page. If you are interested in taking non-matriculated courses please contact the Registrar at registrar@westfield.ma.edu or 413-579-3200 for assistance.

For students interested in taking more than six credits non-matriculated and will not be applying the credits to a degree additional credits may be taken by completing the professional development waiver.

Do you offer graduate assistantships?

Yes, a limited number of graduate assistantships are available each year for graduate students. These opportunities are competitive and are awarded to students with excellent academic records who are enrolled in a graduate degree program.

Are scholarships available?

We offer a Supporting Our Schools Scholarship available to incoming students in licensure programs and a Teacher Incentive Discount throughout the program if MTEL requirements have been met.

Will I receive academic support?

Every student is paired with a dedicated advisor who guides you from choosing classes to planning your future. You’ll also have access to resources like the Banacos Center, Writing Center, and Career Center. And even after graduation, our Career Center provides lifetime support.
